Welcome to the MMA Report with your host Corey Alllen
April 25, 2010, Corey Allen, Sacramento
If you missed WEC 48 from Sacramento, you missed the fight card of the year, and a definate fight of the year candidate as well. This card needed to deliver as it was WEC's 'coming out party' on pay per view, and Dana White knew it. After the final prelim fight on Spike TV, White did an interview with Joe Rogan, and said "if there is anyone who doesn't want to hype up a card too much, trust me its me, and I'm telling you, these fights will not disappoint". This was a shot at UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and his terrible performance at UFC 112. The good news is that these fights did NOT disappoint in the least, and actually in my opinion put WEC on the map. Leonard Garcia vs Chan Sung Jung was a three round WAR that will definately be considered for fight of the year, and in the Joe's (Silva and Rogen) opinions, it was fight of the decade. It was not a technical battle by any means, but if you enjoy bar-room brawls for fifteen minutes straight, this is the fight to watch. This was the final fight on the preliminary card and thank god for that. Dana White lucked out bigtime and should be kissing these two warriors' feet. Think about this. The WEC is not very well known, but the prelims were free on Spike. There must have been thousands of people watching the prelims on the fence about shelling out sixty bucks to watch the main card. With Garcia and Jung putting on the performance they did, theres no way those of you 'on the fence' did not buy the event. The main card started with another three round war, as Scott Jorgenson picked up a decision victory in his rematch with Antonio Banuelos. Then it was Anthony Njokuani (owner of one of the funniest head kick knockouts you'll ever see) tapping out in the first round to a rear naked choke by Shane Roller. Up next came a fight I was really looking forward to. Manvel 'the Anvil' Gamburyan and Mike Brown in a number one contender fight for the featherweight title. Gamburyan showed exactly why 145 is the perfect weight class for him, and viciously knocked Mike Brown out in the first round. Gamburyan is undefeated at the weight class and will definately have a great showing in his title fight this summer. Then came the first of TWO title fights. The lightweight title was on the line in a rematch from 2009's WEC fight of the year. Ben Henderson defended the crown against Donald 'the cowboy' Cerrone, but this fight wasn't a fight of the year candidate, it was a cowslaughter. Henderson won easily in the first with a vicious elbow to the temple, followed by a textbook guillotine choke that Cerrone had no chance of escaping. I can't wait until Dana White merges the lightweight division into the UFC, and we'll see what Ben Henderson is REALLY all about. Finally, the big one. Jose Aldo vs Urijah Faber. Faber came out first to his classic "California Love" and the crowd popped BIG, a pop that would rival GSP in Montreal. SO what does Aldo do? He comes out to "Run This Town" and gets booed out the building. He didn't come out to a song like that for no reason, as he did exactly that. For five round Aldo kicked Faber in the quad and knee over, and over, and over again, until Faber's leg was twice the size and he couldn't walk. It was a cakewalk for Aldo who will now face the undefeated (at 145) Manny Gamburyan in the Summer. Gamburyan will come at Aldo, unlike Faber who seemed tentative, until it was too late for him to do anything anyway. So I whole-heartedly say this one thing. Give WEC a chance, I did, and it was the best card of the year. If you consider yourself a true fight fan, do absolutely anything you can to see this card, it was a spectacle. And on a side note, Dana White was shown in the stands with the hottest free agent out there, Jake Shields. It seems as though Shields will be in the UFC very, very soon. ...I'm sure GSP will welcome him accordingly...
