2010 Vancouver House to showcase city as Green Capital E-mail
Tuesday, 09 February 2010

Vancouver House to showcase City as Green Capital Vancouver, BC - Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson unveiled Vancouver House, an interactive pavilion located at LiveCity Yaletown, to media and special guests today. The pavilion will be open to the public throughout the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, showcasing the City’s Vancouver Green Capital economic development strategy and highlighting the work of local entrepreneurs and community leaders.

"Vancouver House will welcome the world and tell our story of business innovation, environmental leadership and sustainability across all sectors," said Mayor Robertson. "We’re capitalizing on the global spotlight from the Olympic Games to showcase our City’s best and brightest at Vancouver House. By promoting Vancouver as the Green Capital, we’re putting our local economy on the world stage, and creating an economic legacy for our city long after the Games end."

Vancouver House tells the story of Vancouver Green Capital, the City's powerful new economic development strategy, as told by the innovative and creative Vancouverites who are bringing it to life. The pavilion features people from Vancouver who are actively making our city a Green Capital – economically, socially and environmentally - through their business initiatives and practices.

"Metro Vancouver is poised to go for Olympic gold in leading the world to a new and cleaner energy industry," said Dr. Wal van Lierop, President and CEO of Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital. "It already has decades of strong operational experience in entrepreneurial new alternative energy ventures, as well as in sustainable practices in old energy giants. We commend Vancouver’s leadership for its Green Capital initiative and its welcoming environment for direct foreign investments in clean energy."

Throughout the Games, Vancouver House will welcome thousands of members of the public, but it will also play host to a number of international business leaders at events coordinated through the Vancouver Economic Development Commission. The pavilion will provide a compelling backdrop to encourage new investment in the City of Vancouver, and build economic partnerships.

"Vancouver is an emerging global leader in clean energy innovation and investment," said Jonathan Rhone, President and CEO of Nexterra Systems Corp. "We applaud the City of Vancouver for its leadership on the Green Capital Initiative. It is a smart, well-designed economic development program that recognizes the importance of green capitalism as a cornerstone of our future economic prosperity."

The Vancouver House Pavilion is itself an example of the City’s commitment to sustainability. Every component — from its structure to graphics to furniture — has been considered not just for its impact on the visitor’s experience, but also its impact on the earth. Designed by local firms Brand Live, Cause+Affect and Haymaker Creative, the pavilion features an innovative eco-design including salvaged material works of art from local designers, recycled floors made from old wood beams from a North Vancouver high school, a BC pine beetle wood feature wall, recyclable carpeting, draperies from old City of Vancouver banners, and much more.

Vancouver House allows visitors to participate in the Green Capital story — an interactive table installation where guests can share their messages of sustainability and have these messages permanently housed within the interactive tabletop for all visitors to view.

Vancouver House will be open to the public for the duration of the Games at LiveCity Yaletown.
